Dermal Fillers Q & A

Primary Medical Associates of Long Island, PLLC

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal or soft tissue fillers are substances injected into the skin to temporarily smooth out wrinkles. Dr. Levinskaya and Dr. Ali-Pennock offer many different safe, FDA-approved dermal fillers.

  • Hyaluronic acid fillers: Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in human connective tissue, skin tissue, and joints. It’s extracted, reformulated, and injected to smooth the contour of your skin and reduce the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles, and scars. Safe and effective hyaluronic fillers include Belotero®, Juvederm Ultra®, Restylane®, Restylane Lyft®, Restylane Silk®, Ultra Plus®, and Voluma®.
  • Radiesse: Radiesse is made from a natural substance found in human bones. Radiesse adds volume to moderate-to-severe creases and increases fullness in the cheeks and other areas.
  • Sculptra: Sculptra is a synthetic dermal filler that stimulates the body’s production of collagen after it’s injected and is used to plump thin lips and fill laugh lines.
  • Bellafill: Bellafill is a semi-permanent dermal filler used to fill moderate-to-deep folds and wrinkles. It’s particularly effective for softening nasolabial folds and pitted scars.

What does dermal filler treatment involve?

After a physical exam, health assessment, and discussion about your aesthetic goals, you’re ready for dermal filler treatment. During dermal filler treatment, your clinician first marks and cleanses the injection sites. Next, she numbs the area with ice, topical cream, or a local anesthetic.

She then injects the filler into your skin, massaging the area as she goes, and evaluating the immediate results to see if more product is needed. After your injections, she cleans the injection sites and applies ice.

The entire process takes between 15 minutes to an hour.

What results can I expect from dermal fillers and how long will they last?

Dermal filler results vary depending on the product and your treatment goals. Hyaluronic fillers are ideal for men and women trying fillers for the first time because they’re the most temporary. Results last anywhere from 6-12 months before the body naturally absorbs the particles.

For longer-lasting results, consider Radiesse, which lasts around a year. Sculptra stimulates the production of collagen during the months after treatment for results that last up to two years or more.

Bellafill smooths lines and wrinkles for up to five years. Some dermal fillers require follow-up injections for optimal results. As with all cosmetic procedures, individual results will vary.
